Tier 1: Main Deck Construction Empty
PostSubject: Tier 1: Main Deck Construction   Tier 1: Main Deck Construction Icon_minitime1Sat Dec 21, 2019 10:47 pm

The next first-year standard class is Main Deck Construction. If the name was any indication, this means it was a class based on constructing specifically the main deck. There classroom looked just like the one used for Introduction for Duel Tactics except more... personalized. All around the walls were posters of famous duel monsters as well as wallscroll paintings, calligraphy pieces, and what looked like authentic ninja weapons. In front of the classroom was a full samurai armor display complete with a sword-stand on the desk. There was word that the teacher was a new foreign professor but nobody knew who and from where.

Yuriko became suspicious when she entered the classroom for her main deck construction class. It almost looked the same sans the posters and the...

Whoa.

Yuriko looked surprised at the samurai armour that was at the front of the classroom. "Cool!" Yuriko began to approach the armour.

And reached her hands towards it, she wondered if it was behind some hard to see glass case or if she can actually touch it.

Either way, she was going to find out right now. And whatever happens, she hoped that she didn't get into trouble for it.

Maybe she can before the Professor for this class enters!

Shiki and Akiha followed suit. While Shiki was far too busy looking at the schedule and taking notes, Akiha's eyes also drifted towards the interesting display of armor and weapons.

"Cool indeed!" Akiha said. "Do you think the person knows how to fight or just collects stuff? Mom won't even let me within two feet of a display sword!"

"H-Hey, hey!" a female student called over to the girls from the class seats. "The period's about to start! The professor could show up any minute."

A young boy darted into the class and went straight for the seats exclaiming "Hey, I think he's... coming?" with a questioning tone. Everybody quickly straightened up in their seats, getting out notebooks and pencil cases, trying to make themselves look like model students. This may have been a new teacher to the school, but if the rumors were true, they're supposedly a foreign champion. You don't encounter somebody like that every day. And this school hires only the best of the best. Without a doubt, he's a first-class duelist.

As everyone settled into position, a strange sound cut into the air. Some sort of squeaking? Like little wheels rolling very fast? The sound just kept getting louder and louder, growing and stirring, until suddenly-

*Bam*

A man in an orange suit burst through the door riding a wheeled office chair backwards.

There was silence in the room, until the man breathed deep through his nose and yelled-

"DAMN! That wasn't right at all!!"

He got up and walked back out the door, dragging the chair with him.

Everyone in the class was dumbfounded and silent. Soon after, the squeaking sound repeated again, rapidly approaching until the man burst through the door, stopping in the direct middle of the room perfectly and-

"DAMN! It didn't work again!"

Dragging the chair along again, he exited the door. About a minute later, he repeated this.

"By Liberty's crown! Why isn't this working?? The wheels are supposed to trip over the door lift and make he tumble!"

He's TRYING to trip over?? everybody exclaimed in unison.

"Oh whatever. Let's just begin. I'm so demotivated now though..."

The man stood up, rubbing the back of his neck. He was definitely a tall man. His hair was long and silver, but it was ragged and frayed, spiking on ends like bed hair. He had a noticeable stubble and a strong jaw. He wore an orange suit and pants. His vest and shoes were navy. Instead of a tie, around his neck was some kind of blue headband with a metal piece. His belt was bulky and mechanical looking with a rectangular piece lodged into the wide buckle with a dragon mark on it.

"Right right, okay. Introductions, er, introductions..." the bizarrely dressed man muttered out loud. He thrust an arm forward and steeled his expression. "Henshin! I am Dr. Abraham Columbus Washington! The National Champion of The United States of America! And I. Am. A. Japanaphile~!"

Dr. Washington let out a boisterous laugh while the students sitting quietly and watching this were frozen in shock.

"Samurai, ninjas, geishas, tokusentai, I love it all! Believe in the you who believes in me who believe it!"

Nobody was quite sure how to deal with this... character.

"Alright, so this is tier 1 Main Deck Construction," Dr. Washington stated, suddenly pulling out a tablet and tapping on it. The screen behind him lit up and displayed various cards. "Constructing the main deck is the most crucial part of playing the game. Now before we begin, are there any questions you all have about the course?"

He chooses to act like a teacher after that??

"He probably knows how to fight, but I don't think they would let someone who collects things join this class." Yuriko told Akiha as they arrived for class, and it seems as though it was going to be in session any second now, with a girl even telling her and her friends to sit down.

"Who are you?" Yuriko asked back to the girl before sitting down at a nearby desk as she waited for the teacher to arrive. She brought out her pencils and notepads that she was going to use in this lesson and line them up neatly at her desk.

As she continued to wait, until she was surprised by the Teacher's appearance like everyone else in the room. She watched as he soon finished his stunt.

"COOL!" She shouted out and clapped, amazed by the Teacher's stunt even if he thought it wasn't good before he introduced himself. she was right, he does know how to fight.

But she remained quiet when he asked for questions. Yuriko just wanted the lesson to start already.

Akiha and Shiki joined the rest of the classroom in its bewildered response.

Japanophile? Akiha thought. From what he described he just seems to like stuff Japanese kids do.

She was quick to scramble for notes however when he started suddenly with his lesson. Shiki calmly did the same.

"Let's start with the basics," Dr. Washington stated. "The main deck consists of a bare minimum of 40 cards up to 60. Can anyone tell me what is the best amount of cards to have in your deck is between 40-60?"

Yuriko listened as Washington began his lesson and asked the first question. She quickly thought about the best amount of cards that should be in a deck. For her she would like to have around 40 to 45 cards, even if 40 was less then 60, but that will likely change for her the more she learns about cards at this academy.

Yuriko raised her hand to give an answer. "45?" She gave out her answer to Dr. Washington.

Shiki decided to remain quiet for this lecture, mostly out of a desire to keep with note taking. Akiha, meanwhile, just didn't want to speak up and be wrong. Fortunately, Yuriko was the one who answered. Akiha's own guess was 60 just because, well, weren't more cards better?

Some of the nearby students snickered at Yuriko's answer while Dr. Washington was busy scanning his class roster.

"Mmmm... Yamashita Yuriko," the teacher read. "Ooh. A native Nihonjin. How subarashi. But you're wrong. The most widely accepted answer is..."

The board displayed a big number 40 that even the most farsighted student could read.

"40 cards," Washington stated. "This standard comes from the basic principle of probability. Let's use a poker deck for example."

The board's display switched showing a deck of basic poker cards from ace to king each in sets of four.

"A standard poker deck has 42 cards," Dr. Washington stated the obvious. "For our example, we'll use this in the context of Blackjack. In blackjack, your aim is get cards that add up as close to 21 as you can without going over. Aces count as 11 while the other cards sum less than 11 and face cards are valued at 10. So the best possible scenario is when you start with one ace and one ten or face card. This called blackjack."

"At the start, the player gets two cards drawn randomly from this deck. Now looking at this, can you imagine the statistical chances of you drawing specifically an ace and a face card?"

The screen started displaying a pair of cards at random. Tens and face cards showed up pretty often, but aces only appeared once in a while, and both appearing at once was even less often. The screen displayed the full deck laid out again.

"Now what if we added another two sets of fives and threes?"

More cards were added to the display.

"With this, the chances of getting black jack is even slimmer," Dr. Washington stated. "Now return to the original deck, what if we took out all the fives, sixes, and sevens?"

The display reflected his instruction.

"And now your chances are significantly higher," Dr. Washington stated. "You see, with as few cards as possible, the chances of you drawing the cards you want are higher. Now let's see. Errrr, you. The one who looks like a bland side character."

Dr. Washington was pointing at Yato who was sitting in the middle row, who flinched and jolted in response. Whether it was for being called out suddenly or being called a boring side character was anybody's guess.

"If you have three copies of a card in a forty card deck and your starting hand does not have one copy, what is the percentage chance the first card you draw is that card?"

Yato quickly fumbled out a calculator and started typing.

"Uuuh... 8.6%" Yato stated.

"Correct," Washington stated. "Now, once again let's say you have three copies of a card in a forty card deck again. What is the chance that you'll have atleast one copy of the card in your starting hand of five? Enter your answers in your D.D.D"

All of the students pulled out their devices where the question has been displayed. The started doing the scratch work and typing down the answer.

Judging by the way that the students were snickering at her, Yuriko made a large gulp sound as she was told that she was wrong. The answer was forty, as obvious when Washington displayed a giant forty in large numbers. "Oh... I, didn't know that." Yuriko played with her fingers.

Hey, at least she knew she was a native on this Island now.

Washington explained more about the deck system, which Yuriko listened to carefully, but stopped when he called out someone to answer the next question, that person being Yato.

Who, got the question right.

But then Washington gave out another question, this time though, Yuriko would have to answer it using her D.D.D, which she soon took out and looked at the question...

"Hmm." Yuriko thought of the question carefully before inputting her answer.

15%

For the first time, Shiki's eyebrows furrowed. She wasn't the fondest person of math, and making mental calculations made her head ache. She pulled out her runes from her pockets, careful not to catch the teacher's attention as much as possible, and gave it a slight little shake.

"Mmm..."

She put in an answer of 25%. She didn't expect it to be right, so she would just have to make up her score with something else.

Akiha didn't even bother thinking.

50%. Four of the same cards felt like a lot from her experience, so she didn't feel the need to make an educated guess.
