GAME START! Duel Academy Entrance Exam Empty

Ever since the artificial island was created, this annual event was practically a local holiday. Offices and stores closed and everybody aside from those directly involved with the exams were given the days off. The roads were cleared to make easy transportation to and from the exam building. A constant cycle of buses go from the port to the exam building, taking prospective duelists straight off the ships to the test.

Young duelists have come from all over the world in hopes of entering the multi-billion dollar academy in pursuit of their passion and future duelist career.

The exam building was a tall building, about a hundred paces wide and five stories tall. Directly behind the building was a giant dome-like structure. The main building seemed to be wedged into sports dome like an overgrown entryway.

The main entrance had a wide stairway leading up to a pair a large automatic doors with glass panes. Directly inside was a lobby area with a desk situated in front of a large opening. Entrants registered their information and decks quickly and efficiently, then given entry cards and papers before led through the opening.

Dozens of kids were waiting patiently in the waiting area. The first stage of the exams were done in groups. Once a room opens, the hopeful young duelists will be led to the first half of the exam. For now though, the gathering of young entrants passed the time by intermingling.

Yuriko was feeling a little stressed today. Ignoring the fact that she had arrived on the island yesterday and had so little time to prepare for the exam, they're was also the fact that she slept in and almost missed the exam itself.

"I'm going to be late, i'm going to be late, i'm going to be late."
Was what was on her mind. Fortunately she wasn't late and had in fact made it on time, she could cheer right now for not being late for the exam. But she felt as though if she did, she would be late, so she entered the large building, registered herself for the exam and sat in the waiting room.

By herself. As she wanted to wait for other people to come to her first instead of going to them. "Yes. This is how i'm going to make friends for now on. Just wait for people to come to me. Hopefully I pass this exam." She looked down at the deck that she had.

And sighed.

"And find out what happened to you." She looked sad as she remained quiet.

Not too far from where Yuriko was standing, a petite girl with long lilac hair was going around with a small school bag and a phone pressed to her ear. Despite the vibrant color of her eyes and the rosy color of her cheeks, she had an almost ghostlike aura about her. Perhaps it had to do with the blankness of her eyes. Perhaps it was the lack of tone in her voice and its low, whispery quality.

"...no," she said into the receiving end of her phone. "Yes...no...I am alright."

Shiki's aunt was on the other end, worried about whether or not the girl had made it on time for the exams. Her aunt had insisted dropping her off lest Shiki wander off, but Shiki's runes had decided that it was best she go alone, and thus here she was.

"I believe I am early," she murmured into her phone. "...yes, I promise to call when the exams are over...Alright, I love you, too."

Shiki would hang up and place the cellular device into her pocket, the tiny trinket dangling from it making a small jingle as she did. Observing the area around her, it seemed that everyone was waiting for the doors to open. While Shiki had known how to get here, she wasn't yet familiar with how to navigate the school and get to her assigned room. She supposed she would have to ask directions, but from whom.

A little distance from her, she heard a small sigh.

A girl was standing near her, delightfully only a little taller than her with large hazel eyes and hair the color of wheat. She seemed a little apprehensive and in need of comfort. Shiki wondered if it was right to intervene, and even if she didn't intervene, perhaps the girl knew more about directions to the room than she did.

Digging into her vest pocket, Shiki pulled out two divination runes, small smooth wooden pieces with the runes for "I" and "S" carved onto it.

"Shall I go ask the girl?" she asked herself.

She'd toss the runes into the air and they fell down. One was blank and the other was the "S" rune. "S" stood for sun and symbolized power, joy, and success. Shiki hummed and moved over towards the girl.

"Excuse me," she said, soundlessly reaching the girl's side and staring at her blankly. "May I ask you something?"

Yuriko soon began to tap at her deck in rhyme as she waited for the exams to begin. As she did she didn't notice that a girl was walking towards her and was reaching her shoulder. Once she did, Yuriko jumped slightly and almost caused her deck to fall from her lap. But she managed to keep a tight grip on it as she turned towards Shiki.

"Hu-Huh?" She turned, looking around before looking at Shiki. Wanting to forget what happened just now, Yuriko looked happy again as she slowly waved towards Shiki. "Ok Yuriko, just be nice, this girl probably just wants to say hello." She thought in her mind as she continued to wave.

"Oh hi." Yuriko greeted Shiki as she began to look curious. "Oh? Sure. You can ask me something, what is it?" She asked the girl.

Yuriko would be met with blank eyes staring straight at her. Shiki stood prim and proper in front of her with her runes clutched in one hand. She blinked. And then she bowed.

"Hello. Pardon me for bothering you," she said. "I am not that clear yet on instructions with the exam. Once the doors are open, where do we proceed from there?"

Shiki's voice was a hushed drone, montone in sound and without inflection. Paired with the lack of expression on her face, she almost seemed mechanical. Perhaps the only slightly natural thing she did as she spoke was tilt her head to one side in the end in curiosity.

Yuriko briefly panicked when Shiki started to stare at her, she felt as though that if she made one wrong move she could make Shiki upset. She really didn't want to gain a rival on her first day here so she tried to make the most of it by saying some nice things about Shiki every time she finished speaking.

"I like your hair too." Yuriko smiled, before realising that Shiki was asking the question about the exam and stuttered. "U-huh. Oh the door nearby will open up and we'll be escorted to the start of the exam. Which should be starting in a few minutes I think." Yuriko answered Shiki's question, as she soon noticed her runes.

"I like your symbols by the way. They look creative."
Yuriko pointed out to Shiki.

Yuriko's small blurt about Shiki's hair led the doll-like girl to lift a strand of it and look at it thoughtfully. She then looked back.

"I do not dislike my hair, yes," she said. "Thank you."

As Yuriko talked about what would happen after the doors opened, Shiki stared and listened intently. Once she was finished, Shiki nodded.

"I see. Thank you for telling me. I shall indeed wait."

It was then that Yuriko talked about the symbols on her runes. It was at this remark that Shiki remembered the second thing she wanted to ask. However, was it really approrpriate to pry? It seemed the girl was asking about her runes anyways, so she supposed she'd flip them again to see what she should do next.

Once again, she received an affirmative response from the runes. She looked at Yuriko again.

"Thank you," she said. "They're Scandinavian runes. They're used to guide the path to the future fated to us. And speaking of fate, they affirm something for me and that I should ask you something else."

The girl looked at Yuriko with a tilted head. "I heard you sigh earlier. You seemed...troubled. Is something bothering you, perhaps?"

Yuriko listened to Shiki about what the runes were. Making Yuriko more fascinated about the runes she had and how they would guide the user to her future, she wondered if she ever got some runes then would it help her guide her future. Like find Ryouta and maybe help her with this school.

"Mythological." Yuriko was thinking about the runes, but that soon stopped when Shiki asked if they're was anything wrong in Yuriko's life, which brought her happy thoughts to an abrupt pause which soon turned to sadness. As did her expression.

"Y-Yeah." Yuriko stuttered as she sighed again. "Just, my personal life has been hell. And i'm just worried about the entrance exam in general. Like the typical. What if I fail the exam and other such scary thoughts like that, you know?" Yuriko sounded slightly dismal in her tone of voice as she began to look slightly anxious now that she mentioned her thoughts about failing the exam.

Then again, most people in this room probably had the same thoughts as her. So that had to count for something...Right?

"Stoooooooooooooop right there!" came a voice, immediately followed by a girl wearing a red Chinese-style dress with a white jacket, her long black braid flying around to smack her in the face as she quickly put on the brakes, stopping just as she passed the two girls. From her flush face and heavy breathing, one could guess she had been running for quite a while.

"That's no way... to think... before the exam! You'll pass! We'll all pass! This is a once in a lifetime chance! Don't let it slip away before you even get to try!" Caihong said, her words directed towards Shiki. She had just heard the last bit before barreling her way into the room, and just assumed the one not holding their deck was the one not feeling confident.

She couldn't have future dueling partners dropping out before school even started! Otherwise there'd have been no point in coming all this way!

"Your test is coming up soon, right, dear?"

"It should start in a few minutes, I think."

The phone was wedged precariously between ear and shoulder. A compact haversack drooped down, only slung over one shoulder, swinging slightly as Murasaki readjusted the strap. She smiled to the woman at the information desk and mouthed a quick thank you very much as she picked up the paperwork. Murasaki checked her exercise watch to confirm that she was on time, and walked away so the rest of the crowd was filtering through.

"Don't worry, Mama, I already got my papers dealt with and everything! Being on-time doesn't mean that I'm late. You're the only one who thinks that way."

Murasaki laughed as a sigh came through the speaker.

"Dear, I'm not worried about being on time. I'm worried about the exam. You... understand that you have to pass to get in, right?"

"Of course, Mama! Is this a trick question or something?" Murasaki's expressive eyes flashed with amusement. She was certainly taking the conversation much less seriously than the lady on the line.

"Dear, just... Don't do anything silly, okay? It's not like a casual game with Jun or Saeko. This is your future you're talking about."

"Oh, I get what you mean, Mama. But don't worry! I'll have something to brag to you about later. Promise! I didn't come all this way to take things easy, after all." Murasaki took a sulky tone to her last statement. "But seriously! There's so much to do at Maltese Cross! I'm really excited."

Laughter came from the other end. Murasaki beamed.

"Well, as long as you're aware, dear. We love you very much at home and we're wishing you the very best. Make us proud, and have fun, okay?"

"Of course! Love you too, mo-"

"Stoooooooooooooop-!"

"Ooh, this looks fun. Can't miss it! Talk to you later, mom!"

Murasaki didn't wait for her mother's words of protest as she hung up, stowed the phone and papers into her bag, and jogged towards what looked like a fun congregation. A young girl in a stylish qipao was heaving after a heroic sprint as a porcelain-looking girl and a ghostly one looking.

She ran up just in time to hear the tail end of Caihong's exhortation. That was exactly enough to fire her up.

"She's totally right!" Her amethyst eyes blazed. "You'll ace the exams so hard the instructors won't know what hit them!"

She grinned and scratched her head, laughing at herself. "Sorry for butting in. I couldn't help but join in on the pep talk."

As Yuriko expressed her doubts, Shiki pressed her finger against her chin thoughtfully.

"I see," she said. "If I had my tarot cards, I could have possibly made a reading to set you at--"

Shiki's already barely audible voice was soon drowned by a loud and shrill scream. She refrained from having her hands cover her ears as a girl that appeared like the source quickly approached. The source in question was not so far from her own height, dark-haired, dark-eyed, and dressed brightly in reds and white. A long black braid tailed behind her.

The girl seemed to be here in order to give Yuriko a small pep talk and stated how everyone was going to pass for sure. The girl's certainty that they would pass was quite surprising for Shiki and she had to pinch her chin thoughtfully in order to process it.

"I suppose that is a possibility, however, such things cannot be determined by--"

She would again be cut off, however, this time by another chirper girl with silver and eyes that were a bright shade of violet. Shiki's brows would furrow in confusion as tshe also reassured the Yuriko about it before eventually apologizing for interrupting.

"It seems everyone is quite confident in your success," Shiki said softly. Casually, she'd flip her runes. Once again, an "S" appeared. "I am dictated to say that I must do the same and have faith in us passing."

Yuriko gulped before smiling. "Yeah, I guess I will be able to do this without any little problems. We both will and pass the exam together." Yuriko joyfully replied, before two girls quickly joined them and gave a pep talk to Yuriko which made her somewhat doubt herself again and now she felt a little bit stressed that she could fail.

"Ahahaha, yeah, we'll be able to pass this exam without any difficulties!" Yuriko slightly raised her thumb before nodding. "I got to pass this exam now or else these girls will be disappointed in me that i'll fail. The stakes are higher then before now." Yuriko thought at the back of her mind as she waited for the doors to open.

"Anyway the doors should be opening soon, we should probably introduce ourselves." Yuriko advised as she did herself, introducing herself to Shiki, Caihong and Murasaki. "I'm Yamashita Yuriko, it's nice to meet you three." She smiled again.

Caihong's eyes flickered between the two girls as they spoke, something feeling off. The one she was supposed to be cheering up seemed fine, in fact she seemed to be trying to cheer up... the other one...

Oops.

Thankfully another girl ran in and decided to chime in just then, so Caihong simply pivoted to face Yuriko as if nothing had happened. "Yeah, that's the spirit! Win the battle of the mind, now get ready to win the war!" she said, about to continue until Yuriko proposed introducing themselves and proceeded to do just that. "Ah, yes! I'm Caihong Chang. I look forward to the next few years together!" she said as she slightly stepped back and moved to a stance with her left hand diagonally in front of her, her right hand pressed against the top of the palm in a fist, and gave a low but quick bow towards the three of them.

Caihong then lowered her arms and turned back towards the quiet one and the newest addition, an expectant look on her face.

'Dictated to say?' It seemed like the girl with the purple hair was into the occult if the runes were any indication. Regardless, Murasaki gave a warm smile and a thumbs up as Shiki made to encourage Yuriko.

Her interest turned to Caihong's stance as she bowed in welcome. Murasaki grinned when her eyes met Caihong's.

"Murasaki Maeda. Congratulations in advance to all present!"

It was then that the doors opened and a large man entered through. He wore a grey striped suit and a pair of shades. His head was bald save for a trimmed goatee. His suit seemed to press and stretch against a strong, muscular figure. One his hands were a pair of leather gloves with rubber pads on the fingertips. His appearance was comparable to someone you'd expect to be carrying a firearm and guarding the leader of a country.

The man barely looked at the people in the room before lifting a clipboard to his face. He seemed to skim through it briefly before addressing the people in the room.

"Entrants numbered in groups 12-A, 12-B, 12-C, and 13-A, follow me."

Shiki, Yuriko, Maeda, and Cheong would be able to see one of the called out groups printed on their individual entrant cards.

The group would walk down the hallway and enter a massive elevator, the kind built to move industrial vehicles. They'd travel about two floors up and guided into a large room with rows and rows of table and chairs. Each seat had a card with an entrant number that can be found right on their papers. Everyone was quickly seated while the man went up front and seemed to setup various things. The four girls may find that they're all placed fairly separate from each other.

"We will begin the written portion of the entrance exam shortly," the man explained as he wrote on a dry erase board. "In front of each of you is a test booklet and an answer booklet. The written exam is broken into three parts. You will have a countdown of twenty minutes for each section. Once one portion of the exam is over, you are not allowed to return to that section later. Attempt to answer as many questions as you can in the time allotted. All questions are worth the same amount of points. A duelist must know how to make decisions quickly, know what to sacrifice, and have knowledge on many cards and how they affect one another. Once I set the clock, you may begin the first portion of the test."

Then with a sudden bell on his desk, the test proctor yelled "Now!"

With the sound of papers quickly flipping open, the dozens of entrants started scribbling and dotting at rapid speed. Each section had roughly 80 questions and seemed to have basic multiple-choice questions with handfuls of short answer questions scattered around. The questions seemed easy enough so the tough part was reading fast and processing the answer in your head quickly. There were a few questions in each section that stuck out.

Section I.

Q7. In your hand are the monsters "Tainted Wisdom" and "Ancient Brain" as well as the card "Polymerization". What monster are you able to Fusion summon?

  • A - Flame Swordsman
  • B - Skull Knight
  • C - Giltia the D. Knight
  • D - Skull Knight #2

Seeing everyone suddenly make introductions, Shiki made a polite bow and introduced herself as well. "Murasaki, Shiki. It is a pleasure to meet you all," she said.

She was surprised to hear that one of them had the first name Murasaki. What were the odds? Murasaki was a common enough name, she supposed, and she guessed there would not be much confusion so long as she stuck to addressing her to her surname or they address Shiki with her first name. She was going to comment on it, but the test proctor soon summoned them. It was time to go.

Once they were seated, Shiki grasped the runes tightly in her hands. When looking at her exam,she could see a series of questions. From her fair amount of experience of playing, Shiki had a slight general knowledge about things. However, every time she'd answer, she would flip her runes and consult if she should second her answer. After awhile her answers were the following:

7. B. (She didn't really know the answer, but she thought it was the most thematically appropriate considering it was morbid and was a head).

22. D. (She wasn't sure, and she guessed none. Consulting her runes, the runes suggested to go for that instinct).

Question 31 caused Shiki's eyebrow to furrow. Oh, did she find math terribly unpleasant, she did. There was no yes-no to this either. The most she could do was try and remember the values and calculate. Seeing the time ticking, she didn't bother to countercheck her math.

Q31. 4100 ATK points.

Q49. B. (It was easy enough to recall the format of a card.)

As Shiki continued answering, she'd have most of the trouble with the short questions. Most of what she knew was basic knowledge and mechanics. Actual cards that required a bit more knowledge were a little hands off to her and she left at the fate of her runes. That said, she would probably get in if only by a barely passing grade. As for the essay question, she knew Pot of Greed fair enough.

The Pot of Greed is a spell card that allows a character to draw 2 cards from the deck. Over the years it has gained an ill-reputation and was often banned in games. This is due to it easily allowing access to monsters without a fair exchange similar to other monsters and...

Shiki would eventually finish and sigh. She wondered if this would pass as she answered a lot quicker than others...but that was mostly due to her mild guessing.

Caihong smiled towards the two as they introduced themselves as well, but was unable to say anything else before the proctor burst in and announced that the exam was starting. Time to get the formalities over with! Once they were led to their seats, Caihong casually listened to the instructions, and eagerly flipped over her test once she got it. She'd seen plenty of cards an interactions between the different merchants coming through and playing - this should be a breeze!

Section I.

Q7. Right out of the gate Caihong had to stall for a moment on this question. She was fairly certain it was a Skull Knight... but WHICH ONE?! After a few moments of back and forth, she finally marked her answer as B, thinking it best to just go with the original.


Q22. Easily D! She remembered making fun of Gearfriend because he couldn't equip anything at all unless he was half naked!


Q31. Double 1400 was 2800... Plus 300 for 3100... Plus another 1000 for 4100... so the answer was 4100 ATK!

Q49. It's B! The extra deck type always came after Monster!


Q66. B again! Who were they trying to fool here? At least, Caihong tried to keep that mindset while blocking out the moment her pencil hovered over 'D' just because none of her monsters needed tributes. But those were special summons.


Q75. 4... 5... 6... 7... 8... 9... 10... 11... 12... 13- no, wait, level 13 monsters didn't exist. So it was all the levels 4 through 12!

Section II.

Q3. Caihong immediately marked B, but then stopped to think for a moment before writing something underneath. One of those Black Feather or whatever cards was sticking in her head.

'Can't some be used from the hand in certain situations though?'

Q24. C! That's only a spell type, duh.


Q45. A, of course. Just because it's still a trap card doesn't mean it takes up two slots once it moves to the monster zone! It just lets her MST it.


Q67. False! Didn't they already ask a question like this?


Q77. Reckless Greed says to skip the next two draw phases, right? So... all three do just that, the next two? After thinking a moment more, Caihong wrote her final answer: You draw 6 cards and skip the next 2 Draw Phases

Section III.

Q2. The wording of this question annoyed Caihong. The obvious intent was for them to answer Polymerization, but "required to summon ANY fusion monster"? She scratched through all 4 answers before writing in her own underneath.

'E. NONE! Because Gladiator Beasts exist, and they have fusion monsters that don't need a card!'

Q25. Now slightly annoyed with the test, Caihong simply barreled through the remaining questions. Dark Magic Attack! Dark Magician!

Q42. D! We went over this earlier, again!


Q68. E! It's not limited by type!


Q80: Short Essay: What does "Pot of Greed" do?

This question stunned Caihong so much that she had to pause before furiously writing out an essay... in Chinese. With only three words sticking out as being Japanese.

'I don't know why we have to write an actual essay in order to answer a simple question as to what this simple card with only three words on it does, I mean, you might as well have us DRAW a picture instead, seriously, it's so simple that a TWO year old could do it and you seriously want us to waste our time writing an essay for this stupid thing well here's your stupid essay, hopefully once we're done with this we can finally get to the important part where we get to show you that this is pointless and that we really do know how to actually use our CARDS.'

Feeling slightly vented after her little written rant. Caihong sighed and smiled as she flipped her test sheet back over and waited for time to be called. Seriously, why couldn't they just do the whole practical test in the first place?

"Shiki-san, what a cute name!" Yuriko smiled to Shiki as the doors in the waiting room finally opened and Yuriko turned towards them. It seems someone was calling out to the girls as she stood up holding her deck. "Looks like that's us." She informed the other girls as she followed the man towards the elevator.

After the ride which Yuriko felt strange on since it was an elevator. She would soon arrive at the exam room and was assigned her seat. Away from Shiki, Murasaki and Caihong as she looked down at her test sheet. She scartched her legs as she took out a yellow pencil.

As the test was being explained, Yuriko started to briefly sweat in fear over failing this part of the exam. "I have to be careful with these answers, if I fail just one I will probably be kicked out of here and my only chance at getting an education here will be for nothing. Along with finding my brother." Yuriko thought as the test began.

And she began to hear the sounds of pencils being used to scribble onto test papers around her. Wanting to do something, Yuriko began to answer the questions on her test sheet. She didn't really know much answers so she had no choice but to guess some of them.

Q31. 4100 ATK (That was easy even if it took Yuriko a little while to answer)

And finally they're was the last question, which Yuriko had the most difficult of all...Pot of Greed. She gulped as she guessed what the pot of greed was, at first she thought it was just a pot filled with greedy people. But then she remembered that Ryouta showed her the card one time when she was upset with school.

And she just happened to remember it right now!

Q80. I can't turn this into a simple essay so i'm going to write it as a sentence instead, the pot of greed allows you to draw two cards.

And she finished, sighing heavily as she reached her hands out in front of her. Wanting to tap something so people can know that she finished this part of the exam, with hopefully flying colours...Or in this case cards.

Murasaki's face lit up when Shiki introduced herself. It looked like they had a Murasaki-san and a Murasaki-chan among them! But she'd save the punning for later.

Well, okay, now was the time for the boring part of the exam. Murasaki had studied for this part all the same though!

Q7. B. Skull Knight

She looked at the first questions of section 1 and giggled. They were talking about some old-school cards.

Q22. B. Legendary Sword

As she forged her way down the exam, she blinked as she hit a question that gave her pause. The infamous "None of the above!" Question 22 was asking for a precise reading, wasn't it? "Can be equipped" meant "legal target," and even though Gearfried would destroy anything attached to it, you could equip spells to it. Either she was overthinking it or the examiners didn't think it through.

Q31. 2800+300+1000 = 4100

Ew, short answer. She glanced over the question, giving it the minimal attention span before writing down an answer. The right answer? Hopefully.

Q49. B. Dragon/Synchro/Tuner/Effect

More than halfway through the exam. So many of these questions dealt with very specific readings. Mursaki felt like she was taking the bar exam. She squinted down at this question. Okay, great, more of the same. Well, "Effect" had to go at the end, so she had coin toss odds.

Q66. B. 2

As she made her way down, oh hey! She's familiar with Level 7 monsters! Very familiar!

Q75. The monsters have levels: (3)+2+1+2+5. So you can Synchro any monster between levels 4 and 12 inclusive if it meets the summoning requirements (This means 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12).

The trick was to just look at the non-tuner levels and realize you could make any number between 1 and 9. The hint was that there were two level 2s.

Going into Section II, Murasaki shook out her hand. She had kept her short answer questions as short as she could think of. This was one of those time-trial style exams.

Q3. B. The following turn after it was set.

You can totally get around the requirement though!

In particular, Murasaki knew of a card, Typhoon, that could be played directly from the hand. Plus there was Makyura the Destructor which let you play from the hand too, and that one tomb card, and... But that wasn't a type of trap card.

Individual card effects were exceptions to the rule, so... Murasaki decided she might as well give the book answer for the rules.

Q24. C. Quick-Play

Traps were Spell Speed 2 anyways, right?

Q45. B. 4

I mean, it said so on the card text according to the prompt.

Q67. False

Well, technically, Murasaki guessed it was true if there were another card played in the turn that let people play cards the turn they were set... That wasn't part of the prompt though. Overthinking it would just eat more time. She was so close to the end.

Q77. Six cards are drawn and two draw phases are skipped.

Murasaki cracked her knuckles going into Section III. She was doing okay on time and felt like she had a little safety net to go on. With that, she squinted at the first few questions of the section. Were the examiners playing mind games?

Q2. "You do not use Polymerization" shows up on contact fusion cards. For everything else... C. Polymerization.

Honestly, Murasaki expected some dueling robot to read in her responses, but just in case she kept her comments human-readable. Hopefully after this many years of seeing new students they'd program some snark detection into their AI.

Q25. "Detonate" for Kuriboh.

Gosh, she was so proud of that one.

Q42. D. Quick-Play

Weapon totally needed to be a kind of spell though.

Q68. E. All of the above

Beaver Warrior totally wasn't a Fairy. Thanks, television!

Q80. Allows player to draw 2 cards.

Was this another trick question? Murasaki shrugged and decided to use the extra time to review her other answers.

The third section seemed to go the longest. Depending on how the first two sections went, the final section could make or break everyone's success. It was never disclosed how much of the written exam counted towards the overall score, but there have been entrants who've passed the practical exam but still were rejected due to their written exam score.

The test proctor stood at the front of the room, staring silently at the students as they scribbled furiously for the last remaining seconds.

3... 2.... 1....

Bzzzzz!

"Pencils down now. Please place your answer booklet inside of the text document," the test proctor announced. He made a waving signal and a pair of women in uniform entered the room. The went down row-by-row collecting the documents very quickly. "Everyone exit and take a right down the hall through the large red doors at the end. You will be called when it is your turn to take the practical exam."

Everyone in the room seemed to follow the instructions to the letter, filing out of the room and walking down the hallway. Along the way were about a dozen or so shut doors where other groups were probably taking their written exam. Also along the hall were snack and drink machines which some people who brought along pocket change stopped at to purchase something for their declining stamina.

When everyone went through the indicated doors, they were greeted with a large stadium. They had all entered what seemed to be the audience section with plenty of seats to sit and wait in. In the area below, the wide space had been separated into about three dozen sections, each one with an ongoing duel or being cleared and prepped for a new one.

The duels seem to conclude quickly, however it might be some time before any particular person who had just concluded the written exam will be called for their practical exam.

Shiki was quick to submit her booklet, and would fall in line in order to be led to the next place. To her surprise, it was a dueling stadium of sorts.

"Ah, I suppose it makes sense that they would test our actual skills..."

She gripped her runes tightly and opened her hand.

Is this really my fate?

This time, the runes fell neutral. Shiki frowned. She supposed she would be too lucky if it had given her consecutive yes's. Without much to do, Shiki looked around. She could spot out the three she had met earlier, namely Yuriko.

"Hello again," she said plainly. "Did the exams ease your worries about passing?"

Despite the monotony of her voice, there did seem to be a hint of genuine concern for Yuriko's welfare.

As Murasaki reviewed her answer sheet she briefly remembered the Gearfried question and sighed, shaking her head. She had thought too much about what the examiners were thinking about and not enough about the actual equip effects of the cards... If she had done process of elimination she would have seen that even with the vague wording, she could have played the word games and gotten the answer they expected.

Well, whatever! I think I did pretty well beyond that.

And besides, that wasn't the fun part of the exam anyways. Coming out of the exam, she grinned as she saw the other Murasaki making her way towards Yuriko. Murasaki waved as she made her way over, unslinging her bag to retrieve two canned juices.

"Aw, what's with the long faces? Good work out there!" She offered the juice cans to Yuriko and Shiki.

"Some juice for both of you. Make sure that you're refueled for the fun part!"

Yuriko hastily tried to answer the last few questions on the sheet that she skipped over due to not choosing an answer just yet. "Come on. Just one more question." Yuriko thought as she quickly wrote down an answer. Just as the written exam ended she slightly yelped as she listened to the man on the stage.

Once she gave her test to the woman she walked with everyone else to the next part of the exam. And so looked down at the stadium as she gulped. "That's...Not worrying." Yuriko thought. "Maybe the people I will have to fight will go easy on me since everyone here is new on this island?"

She turned when Murasaki and Shiki approached her and Yuriko tried her best to look happy. "Hi girls. How was you're exams?" Yuriko asked before Shiki asked how was her test.

Which she accidentally revealed honestly.

"Well you know it was just me panicking throughout the duration of the test and me just guessing the answers. Standard test stuff." Yuriko blushed when she realised what she just said. She quickly grabbed the juice from Murasaki.

"Thank you." She bowed to Murasaki as she began to drink the juice, she looked down at the stadium. "So uhh, that stadium's big...What is the fun part by the way?" She looked back at Murasaki. Questioning her on what she said just now.

"Shouldn't it be obvious?" Caihong asked, catching up with the rest of their small group just to chime in to Yuriko's question. "We finally get to show our stuff! Dueling! I can't wait to see what kind of decks you guys have," she continued, pulling out her own deck box and showing it off.

"My Elemental babies are roaring to get some action! Especially after a stuffy written test like that!" Caihong said, sticking out her tongue with a mock disgusted look on her face before changing back to her cheery smile. "Anyway, good luck out there! Knock them dead!" she finished, turning back towards the stadium to try and watch some of the duels going on.

"I attack with Perfectly Ultimate Great Moth!" an entrant taking his test shouted. Behind his was a gargantuan green insect monster with a pair of vibrant blue wings with spiral patterns. As they flapped, they seemed to hypnotize and let out some sort of sparkling dust. It let a screech and flapped its wings in a big movement, letting loose a torrent of wind aimed towards the test proctor's monster.

"I commend you for summoning such a difficult monster," the test proctor stated. He was an average looking man wearing a suit with a crew cut. In front of him was a massive large mechanical monster the color of stone. It looked like a prowling beast with a pair of razor fangs. The deadly winds approached it rapidly. "However, you failed to provide protection for your monster. Relying on brute power alone and sacrificing everything else is a fatal error. Allow me to show you. I activate a quick-play spell! Limiter Removal!"

One of the proctor's face down cards flipped upwards and shined. The mechanical beast in front of him started to glow red, as if its temperature had rapidly risen to critical mass. It let out a dry roar like a tiger with gears stuck in its throat and bounded forward, completely ignoring Perfectly Ultimate Great Moth's attack and pounced right towards the giant bug.

"Ancient Gear Beast counterattacks! Precious Play!"

The Ancient Gear Beast knocked the bug onto the ground and tore into it with fangs and claws. It dispersed but the mechanical monster seemed to have more in it. It let out a frustrated roar at the entrant, knocking him back with the excess damage. The Life Point counter appeared, displaying the numbers "0000".

"Try again next year," the test proctor huffed.

In the adjacent playing field, another test was going on.

"I use my spell Ancient Gear Castle as a tribute using its effect," the test proctor stated. In a cloud of dust and smoke in front of them, a large towering figure rose, clicking and clanking with the sound of mashing gears. "I tribute summon Ancient Gear Golem!"

The monster was a mechanical construct with the same stone color as the Ancient Gear Beast. It had a bulky, armored arm with the other looking like a bare metal skeleton in comparison. The monster's single glowing red eye seemed to look down at the entrant's defense position monster, a little pink bird wearing big red boots.

"Try and survive, rookie," the proctor shouted. "I attack Sonic Chick. Mechanized Melee!"

The Ancient Gear Golem lunged for an attack, a straightforward punch. The entrant shouted something about his trap card only for nothing to occur as the attack landed. Somehow the little bird survived, but the entrant got knocked back and his life points drained.

Many of the ongoing tests were going a similar way. Few people seemed to prove a match against the exam standard test deck the proctors are using. One particular kid on the field directly in front of the section all the girls were watching from was having difficulty.

Panting as if if exhausted, a boy in a hoodie faced against a test proctor with a crew cut and thick beard. In front him was a large monster made of a bunch of skulls and bones piled together. Its lower body was shaped like a tailed, its upper body was thick with powerful arms that stood itself upward from the ground like ma gorilla. Its face was like a big white mask with jagged teeth and small red eyes. The boy's lifepoint counter displayed "2200".

On the opposite side of the field was the large mechanical monster, Ancient Gear Golem. At its left was a similar looking monster with a shorter height and attached to its arm was a rifle-like weapon. It was crouched with its head low, like a soldier on the frontlines. The test proctor's Life Points displayed "2800" in front of him, giving him an 600 point lead on the entrant.

"Your monster has a formidable body, however you failed to secure its field presence. Considering your defensive approach, your facedown is most likely a battle phase trap. However, when my Ancient Gear monsters attack, you're not able to activate any spell or trap ability. Prepare yourself!"

At the signal, Ancient Gear Golem stomped forward and raised its fist. The monster of bones raised up its arms defensively, but with a powerful swing, the Ancient Gear Golem's fist pierced right through the monster. Letting out an angry scream, the white monster crumbled and dispersed. The backlash pushed against the hooded entrant who shielded his face with his arms. His Life Point counter went down 600 points. The wind blew his hoodie off, revealing a head of disheveled grey hair.

"Ryu Kokki!" the young boy cried out.

"We're not done," the test proctor stated. "Attack! Ancient Gear Soldier!"

The smaller monster aimed its rifle and let out a flurry of shots. The boy yelped and shielded his face again as the holographic bullets shot pass him. His life point counter went down another 1300, leaving him only 300 left. A stray Sparks would annihilate him at this point.

"I'll set a card and end my turn," the test proctor announced. A facedown card appeared in front of him. "Don't worry, kid. One of the lesser duel academies provide moderately adequate education and prestige."

The boy huffed and a gasped. He looked at the two cards in his hand and at his deck. His free hand shakily reached for the top card. "I... I need a monster... I need a monster!"

With a large, shaky shout, he drew his next card with a wide motion. His face was turned away as if he was too frighten to even look at it. His head slowly turned to look and-

"Yes!" He placed the card he drew in his hand and reach for a different card. He slapped it onto his duel disk. "I summon Zombie Master!"

A funnel of fog and shadows appeared in front the entrant. When it dispersed, it revealed a pale figure with ragged dirty clothes and long unkempt hair. Its skin seemed to cling to its bones, its fingers were long and bony. It cackled with a haunting tone.

"I'm discard a monster card from my hand to activate Zombie Master's special ability!" the boy stated, sliding the card he just drew to the graveyard slot. A translucent apparition emerged from his duel disc and floated towards Zombie Master. The monster opened its hollow mouth and sucked in the ghostly mass. Its hands glowed and crackled with black electricity. "Zombie Master can resurrect a level 4 or below zombie-type monster from my grave! Arise Spirit Reaper!"

Zombie Master raised its hands and black lightning shot at the ground and seemed to pour into it. Suddenly, a skeletal hand shot from the ground and clawed its way out, until a skeletal monster in a purple robed emerged, brandishing a curved scythe.

"I see. So you're hoping to use Spirit Reaper's ability that protects it from being destroyed by battle as a defensive wall," the test proctor nodded. "Good move. However, my Ancient Gear Golem still inflicts damage when it attacks a defense position monster. Besides, your Zombie Master is left wide open. You will not survive another battle against my golem."

"I'm not done!" the boy exclaimed. "The monster I just discarded was Mezuki. By banishing him, I can bring back a zombie from the grave! Come! Ryu Kokki!"

Bursting from the ground, the large monster made of skulls emerged.

"Hmph," the test proctor scoffed amusingly, wagging a finger. "Pointless. No matter how many monsters you line up, it won't protect you from my golem's power. Your numbers still fall short."

"I have more than enough actually," the boy stated. He grasped and held up his remaining card. "When I have 2 or more zombies on my side of the field, I can special summon this monster to the field!"

Behind in, a a giant pillar of fire burst upwards. It swirled and spiraled as a monster emerged from it. It looked like a green demon with giant wheels of fire on its sides. It carried on its back some sort of giant box or shrine.

"Kasha - the Underworld Cart!" the boy announced and at its signal his new monster roared. "With his special ability, all other monsters on the field return to the deck!"

"What??" the test proctor shouted. The shrine on Kasha's back opened its large doors and both the entrant and the test proctor's monsters flew off the ground and got pulled inside. Ancient Gear Golem gripped the sides trying to pull itself out only for the doors to shut and seal it inside.

"That's not all," the boy stated. "For every zombie Kasha returned to the deck, it gains 1000 ATK!"

Just as he stated, Kasha's ATK points displayed above him and the counter rose rapidly, stopping at 3000. On top of this, with all his monsters gone, the proctor was wide open for a direct attack.

"Attack! Kasha!" the boy commanded. The monster took a dry breath inside, its maw glowing with flames.

"Very interesting," the proctor stated. "However, you forgot my face down! I activate Reverse Gravity!"

The test proctor's face down made a motion to flip itself up, but was suddenly halted with a strike of electricity.

"What??"

In front of the entrant, his own face down had flipped upwards. It was the card Trap Stun!

"I see! So you were preparing for this eventuality! Well played!" The test proctor shielded himself as the giant monster breathed down a torrent of fire onto him. The proctor's lifepoints displayed 0000.

The holographic figures faded away. The boy collapsed backwards onto his rear and let out an exasperated sigh, as if he had just survived a warzone. He must've been a lot more nervous than he let on, and that was saying something.
